Description

1795 BD-1 Five Dollar, AU Details
First Year of the Small Eagle Type

1795 $5 BD-1, R.5 -- Reverse Repaired -- NCS. AU Details. Most easily attributable by star 1 that overlaps the lowest hair curl and the numeral 5 in the date that overlaps the bust on the obverse. On the reverse, the patch of die rust is easily observable to the right of OF. Die rust is also seen on the obverse, most notably in the area of the lowest hair curls. This is a curious phenomenon for a variety that is generally considered to be the first obverse/reverse combination struck. A possible explanation is offered in the Breen-Dannreuther reference: "Rust on both sides may be due to the delay in striking gold coins, noted elsewhere, due to the high bonds that had to be reduced and posted by three Mint officials."

The strike details are strong on each side with unusually sharp definition (for the grade) on the eagle's breast. The surfaces show lovely yellow-orange color with slightly deeper reddish patina around the margins. The area below the leaves on the reverse shows signs of repair, but this is not immediately obvious without a loupe.
