1795 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle, VF Details
First Year of Denomination, Scarce BD-1 Variety

1795 $5 --Mount Removed, Damaged--NGC Details. VF. Small Eagle, Breen-6412, BD-1, R.5.. The tiny mintage of 8,707 half eagles in 1795 represents the first coinage of this denomination produced at the U.S. Mint. The present coin is an example of the scarce BD-1 variety, with star 1 penetrating the curl, and star 11 distant from Y in LIBERTY. John Dannreuther estimates only 40-50 examples of the BD-1 variety survive today in all grades. Slight rim damage indicates this example was used as a jewelry piece, and the surfaces are unnaturally bright and granular. With all the listed faults, the coin is still a genuine example of a scarce variety of this first-year type coin.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25ND, PCGS# 8066)
