Description

    1795 Small Eagle Five, BD-1, AU50
Likely the First U.S. Gold Variety Struck

1795 $5 Small Eagle AU50 NGC. BD-1, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a. The flag of the 5 overlies the drapery and stars 1 and 15 are embedded in the lowest curl and the bust tip, respectively. Die rust is always a feature of the obverse of BD-1, which early-gold specialist Harry Bass, Jr. (and apparently John Dannreuther as well) believed was the first of the 12 1795 Small Eagle die varieties. The reverse shows four berries in the wreath, two inside and two outside, and the palm leaves join the base of U and touch N in UNITED. This yellow-gold piece shows some chatter in the fields, evidence of light circulation, but mint luster remains around parts of the protected device edges. A rim bump appears at 6:30 on the reverse.
