    AU53 1795 Half Eagle, BD-3
    First Year of Gold Coinage

1795 $5 Small Eagle AU53 PCGS. Breen-6412, BD-3, High R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. Dannreuther in his early half eagle reference seems unsure whether the broad line between the rim and the E in UNITED is a die scratch or die crack. It appears to be a die scratch (as made) in the opinion of the present cataloger. In either event, this is a pleasing example of a popular first-year early gold type. The fields display a hint of apricot toning, and luster dominates the stars, legends, wings, wreath, and curls. Some breast feather detail remains on the eagle, and the portrait displays only slight wear on the clothing and forehead. Marks are surprisingly minimal aside from a solitary pinscratch confined to the reverse border at 1 o'clock.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25ND, PCGS# 8066)
