Appealing 1795 Small Eagle Five Dollar
AU55, Breen-6412, BD-3

1795 $5 Small Eagle AU55 PCGS. Breen-6412, BD-3, High R.3. John Dannreuther and Harry Bass, Jr., in their treatise titled Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties: A Study of Die States, 1795-1834, list the key identifiers for this variety: on the obverse, the tip of the 5 in the date barely overlies the drapery, star 1 is below and touches the curl, star 11 overlies the right diagonal of Y in LIBERTY and joins star 12; on the reverse, a palm leaf touches the bottom of the U in UNITED, another touches the right serif of the left foot of N and extends past the center of that letter, the upper leaf extends to the left foot of I, and there are four berries on the branch, two each side, inside and out.
The authors estimate a mintage of 2,000 to 3,000 pieces for the variety, and 8,707 to 12,106 for the date. They also suggest 175 to 225 examples of the variety to exist in all grades.
The fields of this Choice AU specimen exhibit semiprooflike fields that offer modest variance with the devices at certain angles. Yellow-gold surfaces display a slight greenish cast, and an occasional blush of apricot. Except for light high-point wear, sharp detail is visible on the design elements, including most of Liberty's hair and the eagle's wing and tail plumage. The presence of a few light circulation marks does not take way from the coin's overall appeal. This is an excellent candidate for a high-grade type collection. Encapsulated in a green-label holder.
