1795 Half Eagle, BD-1, AU Details
    Sharp, Even Strike

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-1, R.5 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. The first half eagles coined at the infant Mint in Philadelphia were dated 1795, and totaled 8,707 pieces. Eight obverse and 10 reverse dies were needed, as the Mint's hardening process was far from perfect, and die life was minimal. There are 12 Small Eagle 1795 die pairings known. BD-1 is believed to have been the first struck. There are only 40 to 50 surviving examples known, per John Dannreuther, which are understandably sought-after.

This piece is unusually bold on the eagle's breast, the stars, and Liberty's hair curls. The surfaces are unnaturally bright due to light cleaning, but there are no distracting abrasions. Hairlines are minimal. The strike is even and well-centered -- not always the case with coins produced on a screw press. The type collector will find much to appreciate about this coin.
