Description

1795 BD-1 Half Eagle, XF Details
The First Gold Variety

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-1, R.5 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a, or possibly earlier as the obverse crack from the edge to the 9 and drapery is not immediately apparent. Rust lumps in the lower curls, field, and date are evident. Harry W. Bass, Jr. and John W. Dannreuther have concluded that the BD-1 is the first variety of 1795 Small Eagle half eagles produced at the Mint, therefore, the first gold coins ever struck in Philadelphia. These coins are historic. Due to the repair on both sides, this honey-gold example should prove affordable for budget-minded collectors.
