1795 BD-1 Half Eagle, AU Details
    The First Variety

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-1, R.5 -- Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b-c/b. The late Harry W. Bass, Jr. concluded that this was the first 1795 half eagle variety, and John Dannreuther presents this die pair as the first variety in his book. He suggested that the mintage was 750 to 1,500 coins. This intermediate die state was actually minted rather early in the life of the die pair, and represents one of the first few hundred gold coins ever minted at Philadelphia. Both sides of this light yellow example retain considerable detail, but are marred by extensive scratches that are most apparent on the obverse. Here is a candidate for the budget-minded collector.
