Description

1795 Small Eagle Five, XF Details
Extremely Rare BD-12 Variety
Perhaps 12 to 15 Pieces Known

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-12, High R.6 -- Scratched -- ANACS. XF Details, Net VF20. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The so-called "Apostrophe Variety," so named because of the partial remains of a letter between the B and E of LIBERTY. Recutting is also visible on the I in the same word. On the reverse, the bases of TAT in STATES are joined, as are the bases of AME in AMERICA. BD-12 is a rare variety of this important issue, the first year not only of the series, but of any gold production for circulation at the U.S. Mint. Although the 1795 Half Eagle is not rare for an early gold date, a sizeable percentage of the survivors represent the BD-3 die marriage; all other varieties are either scarce or rare. This nicely detailed example has rich orange-gold patina along the borders, while the centers show lighter bronze-gold color. A scratch near the right side stars explains the ANACS designation, although the reverse at 5 o'clock also has a small area of pinscratches. However, traces of luster cling to the curls behind Liberty's neck, and the eagle's wings retain rich definition.
