    1795 BD-3 Half Eagle, AU50
    Small Eagle Reverse

    1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-3, High R.3, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a. There is no evidence of die lapping on the obverse. Short graver's lines connect the border to the top of the E in UNITED on this reverse. The initial half eagle production occurred in July 1795 with BD-1, then a new obverse die was placed in the press to coin the next three varieties, BD-2, 3, and 4. With at least 200 examples known, the BD-3 is the most plentiful 1795 half eagle variety. This impressive light yellow example exhibits trivial hairlines on both sides, with lovely orange toning through the peripheral elements.
