Description
1795 Small Eagle Five Dollar, Unc Details
Sharply Struck BD-3
1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-3, High R.3 -- Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine.
Unc Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. The second usage
of the obverse working die has a die crack from edge to star 12,
and extending slightly into the field from the inner point. This
obverse is identified by the "tip of 5 barely overlies drapery"
along with "S11 overlies Y and joins S12" which is the only 1795
obverse with this feature. The reverse has a crack from edge to E
of UNITED, and this die is identified by a leaf running into U in
UNITED. Of the twelve die marriages used in 1795 to strike a
mintage of 8,707 Draped Bust, Small Eagle five dollar gold coins,
the BD-3 is the most plentiful with an estimated 175 to 225 known,
although still a relatively scarce coin for the first year issue of
half eagles from the United States Mint. This is a sharply struck specimen, with fully defined hair detail and well-formed stars, along with good definition of the eagle's feathers. The PCGS holder indicates "Cleaned-UNC Detail", and under close examination fine hairlines are seen on the surfaces of the coin. Light orange-gold coloration with only minor contact marks. Even with the issues, this example nicely displays all of the design elements for the highly sought-after first year half eagle.
