    Description

    1795 Small Eagle Five, BD-3, VF30
    Outstanding Old-Time Color, Eye-Appealing

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-3, High R.3, VF30 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. This coin is a highlight among the early gold pieces offered in this sale: a first-year half eagle of an affordable variety in a seldom-seen mid-level circulated grade with exceptional eye appeal and originality. Olive-gold patina in the protected regions contrasts with slightly brighter bronze-gold hues overall, giving this 1795 Small Eagle five its old-time, circulated look. The strike is even, and moderate detail remains in Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's wings. A couple of tiny ticks between the F in OF and the first A in AMERICA are the only arguable flaws on this type coin. BD-3 is fairly plentiful in the context of early gold issues, although its estimated survival of 175-225 pieces in all grades is scant compared to most 19th century American coinage issues. This piece should not be overlooked. (NGC ID# 25ND, Variety PCGS# 519852, Base PCGS# 8066)
