Description

1795 Five Dollar, XF Details
BD-4, Small Eagle

1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-4, R.5 -- Repaired -- NGC Details. XF. Dannreuther Die State c/a. The 1795 half eagle was the first gold issue struck by the U.S. Mint. The initial delivery was on July 31, 1795. 12 die varieties are known, excluding three die pairs with Large Eagle reverses struck circa 1797. BD-4 is a very scarce to rare variety. The first attribution marker is a die crack from star 12 to the rim. If present, then if the wreath terminates below the O in OF, it is BD-4 instead of BD-3. This canary-gold representative has been whizzed, but glimpses of luster remain within the wings and about the stars and letters. There are no distracting marks.
