1795 Half Eagle, Unc Details
First U.S. Gold Issue, BD-3 Variety

1795 $5 Small Eagle -- Obverse Repaired -- NCS. Unc Details. BD-3, High R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. The Capped Bust Right, Small Eagle half eagles of 1795 were the first gold coins produced by the United States Mint. A small mintage of 8,707 pieces was struck, with 12 die varieties known for the date and type (three more varieties were struck with leftover 1795-dated dies in later years, using the Heraldic Eagle reverse). The coin offered here represents the BD-3 variety that shows star 11 joined to Y in LIBERTY and the upper leaf ending at the foot of I in UNITED. The BD-3 variety probably accounted for 2,000-3,000 pieces of the reported mintage and the surviving population numbers 175-225 examples in all grades.

The present coin exhibits well-detailed design elements that show just a touch of softness on the eagle's leg and head. The bright yellow-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, but show signs of tooling on the obverse. A few faint planchet adjustment marks are evident on the bust. A still-attractive example of our nation's earliest gold coinage.(Registry values: P5)
