    Description

    1795 Small Eagle Five, AU55
    Scarce BD-6 Variety, S Over D Reverse

1795 $5 Small Eagle, S Over D, BD-6, R.5, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c, in an early stage. The reverse shows a fine die crack long the top of UNI in UNITED, but the obverse is uncracked. BD-6 is a scarce Small Eagle die marriage with 60 to 80 survivors, according to John Dannreuther in Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties (2006). This variety is the second and final use of the blundered S Over D reverse die, which shows the final S in STATES punched over an errant D.

This Choice AU example is well-struck and only lightly worn, showing large areas of deeply prooflike mirroring in the protected portions of the fields. The coin is problem-free and has rich tangerine-gold color. The eye appeal of the coin and the rarity of the variety make this a highly appealing first-year Small Eagle type coin.
