Description

1795 Small Eagle Five, AU Sharpness
Popular BD-6, S Over D Variety

1795 $5 Small Eagle, S Over D, BD-6, R.5 -- Obverse Tooled -- NGC Details. AU. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. BD-6 is a rare variety with only 60 to 80 pieces extant, many not gradable due to minor problems. Still, it is the more plentiful of the two die pairings that employ this blundered reverse, which shows the second S in STATES punched over an errant D, with numerous heavy die lines (or spikes) protruding from the dentils. The previous use of this tail die, BD-5, is extremely rare, with fewer than a dozen examples believed known.

This BD-6 representative is sharply struck, particularly on the eagle's breast, the peripheral stars, and Liberty's central hair curls. The only discernible wear is briefly visible on Liberty's shoulder, the high point of the cap, and the eagle's head and right (facing) leg. Light tooling in the obverse fields -- an attempt to efface scattered abrasions -- precludes a numeric grade from NGC, but the protected areas of the fields exhibit semiprooflike mirroring. Bright yellow-gold in color overall.
