Description

1795 Small Eagle Five Dollar, XF45
    Rare BD-9 Variety

1795 $5 Small Eagle XF45 NGC. BD-9, High R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. This piece represents one of the more plentiful of the 12 known varieties of the 1795 Small Eagle five dollar piece, but it is still remarkably rare in any condition, with only 35 to 45 examples believed to survive in all grades. A noticeable die crack from the rim, through the N in UNITED, to the eagle's chest identifies the later die state. The Guide Book lists a mintage figure of 8,707 coins for this issue, though the early Mint occasionally used outdated dies well into the following year, and Dannreuther estimates the production total for this date may be as high as 12,106 pieces (still a paltry sum).

The coin here offered displays bright yellow-gold color overall, with deeper orange-gold accents seen in the recesses around the margins. A pleasing level of detail remains, and surface abrasions are at a minimum. A Choice example of this sought-after Small Eagle type.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25ND, PCGS# 8066)

    Weight: 8.75 grams
