    Description

Very Scarce 1796/5 Small Eagle Five Dollar AU53

1796/5 $5 Small Eagle AU53 NGC. Breen-6418, B. 9-I, Miller-16, R.5. The lone die pairing used in the second year of Half Eagle production, and a very scarce item in any grade. It has been four years since we last sold an example of this early gold rarity, and in fact the 1796/5 from our 2000 FUN Sale was this exact coin. Even though the mintage of 6,196 pieces is not substantially less than the 1795, the 1796/5 Five Dollar is a much more elusive issue. This example is well struck through the centers and retains much semi-reflective luster about the devices. The surfaces are a mixture of green-gold and pale orange, with a barely detectable alloy stain adjacent to star 2. Population: 3 in 53, 16 finer (11/03).
Ex: 2000 FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/00), lot 7690, where it realized $18,975. (Registry values: P7)
