Elusive 1796/5 Small Eagle Five Dollar AU58

1796/5 $5 Small Eagle AU58 NGC. Breen-6418, B. 9-I, Miller-16, R.5. Only a single die marriage was used to produce the entire mintage of 6,196 Half Eagles from this second year of the Capped Right Small Eagle type. Survivors are very scarce when compared to the lower mintage 1795, particularly in grades approaching Mint State. Better struck than most, this outstanding example retains a generous amount of luster beneath delicate orange patina that is most noticeable on the obverse. A "teardrop" blemish curves down from Liberty's eye and a small cut is found near her chin. Population: 7 in 58, 11 finer (11/04).
Ex: Heathgate Collection (Superior, 6/97), lot 1452.
