Description

1797 Small Eagle, 15 Stars Five Dollar
    Extremely Rare BD-2, AU Details

1797 $5 Small Eagle, 15 Stars -- Repaired -- NGC Details. AU. BD-2, R.7. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/d, the reverse with bisecting crack and a further crack down that would reach the rim if not for apparent smoothing in the area. The repair on the obverse of this bright yellow-gold coin is far more obvious, a dull patch tucked behind Liberty's head. Even with the obviousness of the repair, the sheer rarity of any 1797 half eagle -- all die pairs range from unique to "merely" very rare -- renders any survivor a prize, no matter the condition. For reverse-up display in particular, this coin in a near-terminal die state has plenty to offer.
