    AU 1798 Heraldic Eagle Five
    13 Star Reverse, Large 8, BD-2
    Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr.

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Star Reverse AU50 PCGS. BD-2, R.5. Ex: HW Bass Jr. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. The obverse die is immediately identified by the heavy crack beneath the date, as also seen on the very rare 1798 Small Eagle BD-1. This is a pleasing lemon-gold representative with ample luster and a good strike. Marks are inconsequential save for a faint thin diagonal line on the eagle's neck. Though he never obtained an 1822 half eagle, Harry W. Bass, Jr. nonetheless had perhaps the greatest collection of U.S. gold coins, assembled by die state in addition to date and mintmark.
Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 723, earlier purchased from Numismatics, Ltd. on July 5, 1973.(Registry values: P3)
