    1798 Half Eagle, AU53
Elusive Heraldic Eagle, Large 8, BD-5

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Star Reverse AU53 NGC. BD-5, High R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. A respectable mintage of 24,867 Capped Bust Right half eagles was produced in 1798. Eight die varieties are known for the date, one with the old Small Eagle reverse and seven with the Heraldic Eagle motif. This coin represents the Heraldic Eagle BD-5 variety, with a large 8 in the date and the reverse stars arranged in a perfect cross pattern. The BD-5 is a scarce-to-rare variety with a surviving population of just 30-40 examples in all grades. The BD-5 probably accounted for 2,250-3,250 pieces of the reported mintage. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was employed again to strike the 1799 BD-2 variety.

The present coin is an attractive AU53 example, with well-detailed design elements that show a touch of the always seen softness on the centers. Harry Bass noted this issue was , "Shallowly hubbed or lapped." A long obverse die crack is evident from star 7 across the bust to 8 in the date, with another in the field below ER in LIBERTY. The lightly abraded greenish-gold surfaces retain considerable amounts of original mint luster.(Registry values: P3)
