    1798 BD-5 Half Eagle, AU53
    Large 8, Heraldic Eagle

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Star Reverse AU53 PCGS. CAC. BD-5, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. An early stage of the "terminal" die state, with a crack in the left obverse field from star 7 to a curl below the cap, and with a short crack from the bottom of the E to below the R. However, there is no evidence of the continuation of the first crack through the 8 to the border. The reverse has four stars aligned down to the right from star 3, and four stars aligned down the the left from star 4, like crossed swords over the eagle's head. Star 8 joins the eagle's beak, and that solitary feature is diagnostic for the variety. Perhaps 40 examples of BD-5 are known. This piece has a distinct greenish appearance on lemon-yellow surfaces with considerable remaining luster. Population: 18 in 53, 45 finer (6/13).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# BFX6, PCGS# 8078)

    Weight: 8.75 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
