Description

    1798 Large Eagle Five, AU55
Elusive 13 Star Reverse, BD-5 Example

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Star Reverse AU55 PCGS. Breen-6429, BD-5, High R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b, with a heavy crack visible under ER. Mint records indicate 24,867 Capped Bust Right half eagles were struck in 1798, with two major design types and eight die varieties known for the date. A single very rare variety is known with the old Small Eagle reverse, and the others display the Heraldic Eagle motif. This coin represents the elusive BD-5 variety, with a Large 8 in the date and the first A in AMERICA positioned above the eagle's fourth feather. The BD-8 probably accounted for 2,250-3,250 pieces of the reported mintage, with a surviving population of 30-40 examples in all grades.
The present coin is a lightly circulated Choice Au example, with well-detailed design elements and much original mint luster. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces show highlights of green, with only a few minor abrasions. Population: 13 in 55, 33 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# BFX6, PCGS# 8078)

    Weight: 8.75 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
