Description

1798 BD-2 Eagle, AU50
Large 8, 13 Reverse Stars

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse, BD-2, R.5, AU50 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b with extensive die cracks, especially on the reverse. The prominent die crack (or die line) at the lower obverse identifies this die as the same obverse used for the 1798 BD-1 Small Eagle rarity. In his highly valuable reference to early gold varieties, John Dannreuther describes that feature as a guide line, writing: "The [guide] line is a die crack, although the severity of the crack may be related to the deeply incised guideline, also called a scribe mark or line." This guide line/crack is perhaps the heaviest encountered on any early U.S. variety. Both sides retain noticeable luster on this butter-yellow half eagle that exhibits scattered marks and high-point wear that prevents a higher numerical grade. Census: 4 in 50, 43 finer (12/25).
