Description

1798 BD-4 Half Eagle, AU50
Large 8, 13 Reverse Stars
Late Die State

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse, BD-4, High R.4, AU50 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/e. Seven varieties of 1798 Heraldic Eagle five dollar gold pieces are identified, including the BD-4 that is seen more frequently than any of the others, although none are truly common. Perhaps every surviving example of this die marriage shows the reverse rim breaks over ES O, providing immediate attribution. Dannreuther estimates that 80 to 100 examples of the BD-4 are known in all grades. The lustrous yellow surfaces show dusky orange high points from wear and delicate green overtones. This example is housed in an older green-label PCGS holder.
