Description

1798 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle, MS61
Large Eagle, Large 8, BD-4

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse, BD-4, High R.4, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/e, with cuds at E in STATES and OF, and a faint die crack through the stars on the right. Mint records indicate 24,867 Capped Bust Right half eagles were struck in 1798, and eight die varieties are known for the date. One very rare variety features the Small Eagle reverse, and the other seven are of the Heraldic Eagle type. This coin represents the BD-4 variety, with the Large 8 placed high in the date and the first A in AMERICA below and near feather 4 in the eagle's wing. This was the only use of the reverse die, but the obverse was previously used to strike the BD-7 variety of this date. The BD-4 has a surviving population of 80-100 examples in all grades.

The present coin is an attractive MS61 specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show a touch of softness on the eagle's breast and Liberty's hair. The orange-gold surfaces show the minimum number of minor contact marks for the grade, but some faint planchet adjustment marks are seen on the bust and obverse rim. Eye appeal is outstanding. Census (for Large Eagle, Large 8 varieties): 4 in 61, 10 finer (10/17).
