Description

1798 Large Eagle Five, BD-4, MS62
High-End 13 Stars Reverse Example

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse, BD-4, High R.4, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/e, terminal. Listed in the Guide Book as the Large 8, 13 Stars reverse, BD-4 is the most plentiful 1798 Large Eagle five variety. Nonetheless, only 80 to 100 examples are known in all grades. Harry W. Bass, Jr. owned two examples of this issue, one of which was retained for the Core Collection, and the other offered as lot 726 in Part II of the Bass Collection (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), where it realized $16,100 as PCGS MS61.

The deterioration of the dies on BD-4 must have begun fairly early in their usage, as the terminal die state is the most often seen on the market. The obverse was previously employed for the BD-3 pairing, but did not crack until this usage; the reverse is seen here in its only use.

The present representative is superior to the Bass coin offered in the 1999 Part II catalog, showing satiny yellow-gold luster with remarkably few abrasions. The strike is evenly executed, although minor weakness is left on the central hair curls and the upper portion of the shield, as usual. Two small rim cuds along the upper reverse border are consistent with the die state and serve as a quick identifier of the variety. All Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse varieties included, NGC has seen only six submissions in this grade, with three MS63 coins finer (5/15).
