Description

1798 Large Eagle, Large 8, Half Eagle, XF Details
Same Obverse Used On 1798 Small Eagle Five, BD-2

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Breen 6426, BD-2, R-5. The obverse of the BD-2 variety shows a dramatic die crack under the date. It is the same obverse die used on the legendary 1798 Small Eagle half eagle, BD-1. While the BD-2 is not in the same class as the BD-1, it is still a rare and interesting issue. Perhaps 50-70 examples are known today, from an estimated mintage of 3,500- 4,500 pieces. The present coin has muted color and blurred detail from being cleaned long ago, but some of the original texture and charm remain on the lightly abraded surfaces.(Registry values: P3)
