Description

Pleasing 1798 Half Eagle, AU55
Large Eagle, Small 8, BD-6

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Small 8 AU55 NGC. Breen-6430, BD-6, R.6. Bass-Dannreuther Obverse State b, Reverse State b. A substantial mintage of 24,867 half eagles was achieved in 1798, with eight known die varieties for the date. The present coin is an example of the rare BD-6 variety. Strong die cracks are present at right obverse and reverse, but neither is terminal. A rare variety today, but one that does not receive the same level of appreciation as the 14 Star Reverse, Large 8 variants. Still, the discerning early gold specialist will want to pick up an example, especially one so fine as the present coin. Warm orange-gold surfaces remain surprisingly radiant despite light wear, and only a few fine abrasions crisscross the fields. Faint adjustment marks are noted at the central reverse. For the Large Eagle, Small 8 varieties, Census: 7 in 55, 25 finer (4/09).(Registry values: P4)
