    1798 Half Eagle, Small 8, VF20
    Rare BD-6 Die Marriage
    Previously Unconfirmed Perfect Die State

1798 $5 Large Eagle, Small 8, BD-6, R.6, VF20 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, perfect dies. It is unusual to encounter an example of any rare early gold variety in an accessible grade, which makes this remarkably original, problem-free BD-6 1798 half eagle immensely appealing. BD-6 survives to a very limited extent of perhaps 30 to 40 coins. Without a doubt, it is the second-rarest Large Eagle 1798 die variety behind the prohibitively rare BD-7.

This collectible BD-6 representative is lower-end in terms of numeric grade, but there is nothing second-rate about the condition. The surfaces are incredibly smooth and evenly worn, leaving moderate detail in the portrait and the eagle. The obverse border dentils are bold, the reverse mildly weak from 2 to 4 o'clock. Faint adjustment marks appear in the central reverse. The color is completely original with rich green-gold hues. BD-6 represents the only use of this obverse and the first of this reverse. This coin is a discovery piece to some degree, being in the previously unconfirmed perfect die state. Extensive study of the regions that later crack reveals no evidence of breakage. The astute collector should pounce on this remarkable 18th century five.
