Description

1799 Half Eagle, MS61 CAC
Rare Large Reverse Stars, BD-5

1799 $5 Large Reverse Stars, BD-5, High R.5, MS61 NGC. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b, with clash marks in the lower reverse. The 1799 Large Reverse Stars half eagle appears on only two of the nine die marriages for the year, both are very rare in all grades. This coin is the BD-5 variety, which has an estimated 25 to 35 known. The obverse is attributed by a wide date with the last 9 being boldly recut on the lower right, while the reverse is attributed by large stars and the left foot of A touching claw.

This coin features attractive straw-gold deepening to greenish hues closer to the peripheries. Soft luster is found throughout the problem-free surfaces, which have only minimal marks for the grade. The strike is good, with some weakness in right side obverse stars and reverse stars and clouds, but the portrait, eagle's head, wing and shield all have clear definition. This is an exceptional example of the rare Large Reverse Stars variety, appropriately endorsed by CAC.
