Intriguing 1799 BD-5 Large Stars Half Eagle, MS61

1799 $5 Large Stars Reverse MS61 NGC. CAC. BD-5, R.5. Only two of the nine known die varieties of 1799 half eagles had large stars on the reverse, and both are rare. Actually, all nine varieties of this elusive date are rare. John Dannreuther estimates that only 190 to 250 1799 half eagles still exist. The two Large Stars varieties are only known by their appearance for BD-5 and BD 8, with less than 60 pieces known for both varieties combined. The large star punch remained unused until 1807 when it was used for all known varieties except BD-1. We are currently aware of just three or four Mint State examples of this variety, including the present piece.
Both sides have excellent design details, with all individual elements boldly defined with the sole exception of the drapery over Liberty's bosom.. Extremely faint adjustment marks can be seen at the right obverse border. The surfaces are brilliant with greenish-gold patina and the fields are fully reflective, creating a cameo appearance.
An intriguing die state is presented, with a perfect obverse die, and heavy clash marks on the reverse. Usually, when dies clashed, the clash marks were picked up on both sides. After the dies clashed, the obverse must have been removed from the press and repolished before being replaced for more strikes with the clashed reverse die.
The very existence of such a die state is one of those situations that makes numismatic research so enjoyable. Census: 8 in 61, 3 finer (7/08).(Registry values: P4)
