Description

Marvelous 1800 Half Eagle, BD-5, Choice AU

1800 $5 AU55 NGC. Breen-6438, BD-5, High R.3. The obverse, which was used on four out of the five varieties for 1800, features the distinctive blunt 1. This variety is distinguished by the reverse, on which a point of star 13 touches the eagle's neck and the second A in AMERICA is firmly joined to the right (facing) claw. Numerous die cracks on the reverse are also diagnostic for BD-5. This piece is a transitional die state example (between Bass-Dannreuther d/b and e/c), with a faint crack on the obverse between the I and B in LIBERTY.
Impressive luster penetrates the lovely olive-gold patina. The strike is a trifle weak at the centers, as typically seen, although the stars show excellent definition. Dannreuther estimates that between 175 and 250 examples of this variety exist, and fewer than 8 pieces appear at auction, on average, each year. An attractive representative of this early issue.(Registry values: P2)
