1800 Capped Bust Right Five, MS61
    Popular BD-2, Blunt 1 Variety

1800 $5 BD-2, High R.3, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. Mint records indicate 37,628 Capped Bust Right half eagles were struck in 1800, but some of those coins may have been struck from 1799- dated dies. There are five known die varieties for the date. This coin represents the BD-2 variety, with a Blunt 1 in the date and the right foot of the last A in AMERICA touching both the eagle's claw and the branch. The BD-2 has a surviving population of 175-250 examples in all grades and probably accounted for 7,500-12,500 pieces of the reported mintage.

The present coin is an attractive MS61 specimen, with well-detailed design elements and some interesting clash marks on both sides. The antique-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster and show scattered minor contact marks throughout. Some faint planchet adjustment marks are evident on the reverse. Census: 39 in 61 (1 in 61+), 55 finer (11/15). (NGC ID# 25NW, Variety PCGS# 45592, Base PCGS# 8082)

    Weight: 8.75 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
