Description
1800 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle, MS64
BD-4, Blundered M Variety, CAC-Endorsed
One Numerically Finer at PCGS

 1800 $5 BD-4, R.4, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die
State d/b, with clash marks on both sides. According to the 2026
Guide Book, the Philadelphia Mint struck a substantial
mintage of 37,628 Capped Bust Right half eagles in 1800, but die
evidence indicates some of those coins were probably dated 1799.
Five die varieties are known for the date, one with a Pointed 1 in
the date , and four with a Blunt 1. This coin is a representative
of the BD-4 variety, with a Blunt 1 in the date and a repunched M
in AMERICA on the reverse. The obverse die was used to strike all
four Blunt 1 varieties of this date, but this was the only use of
the reverse die. The BD-4 is a relatively available variety and
John Dannreuther estimates the BD-4 dies were used to produce 5,000
to 7,500 pieces of the reported mintage. The surviving population
is estimated at 125 to 175 examples in all grades. The 1800 Capped Bust Right half eagle was a collector favorite since the earliest days of the hobby. The issue began appearing at auction at least as early as lot 1946 of the John F. McCoy Collection (W. Elliott Woodward, 5/1864), where an example was described simply as, "1800 Brilliant proof, scarce." It is doubtful that the coin in this lot was really a proof, but it must have been a high-quality example. The lot realized $11.50, a strong price for that time. Of course, prices have risen exponentially over the years and recent sales include the MS64 NGC specimen in lot 7509 of the Chicago Signature (Heritage, 8/2011), that realized $80,500.
The present coin is a spectacular Choice example, with well-detailed design elements and dramatic clash marks on both sides. The well-preserved orange-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster from both sides. Some light planchet adjustment marks are evident on the reverse. Overall eye appeal is outstanding and the high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. Population (all varieties): 10 in 64 (1 in 64+), 1 finer. CAC: 6 in 64, 0 finer (9/25).
