Description

1800 BD-5 Half Eagle, AU55
Green Label Holder, Gold CAC

1800 $5 BD-5, High R.3, AU55 PCGS. Gold CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State e/c, cracked at the IBE in LIBERTY and through the eagle's tailfeathers on the reverse. BD-5 is a moderately plentiful early half eagle variety, with as many as 250 pieces believed to survive in all grades. This "availability" makes the issue popular as a type coin. Few representatives, however, can compete with this piece, at least for the grade. Certified AU55 in a green label PCGS holder, this lustrous yellow-gold example is considered undergraded by CAC, which awards it the coveted Gold label. Indeed, the surfaces are vibrantly lustrous, and only a trace of high-point friction is observed. The strike is generally sharp, and only light, scattered abrasions are apparent on each side.
