    Description

Smooth Mint State 1800 Half Eagle
    Blunt 1 in Date, BD-5

1800 $5 MS60 NGC. Breen-6438, BD-5, High R.3. Bass Dannreuther Die State a/a. Five 1800 die marriages are known, despite a reported mintage of only 37,628 pieces. BD-5 is attributed by a bold die line from the corner of the lowest leaf in the eagle's branch, an engraver's error typical of the era. The centers are sun-gold, while peach-red toning illuminates the legends and obverse stars. Evenly struck with only slight softness on the breast feathers and the junction of the left wing to the shield. Marks are refreshing in their absence, save for a minor rim ding on the reverse near 5:30.
