Description
Very Rare BD-4 1802/1 Five Dollar AU58
1802/1 $5 AU58 NGC. Breen-6440, BD-4, R.7. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. A very rare die marriage with two pick-up points. A leaf tip points between the RI in AMERICA, and the 1 underdigit is centered within the 2. The date is double clashed within STATES, and the left obverse border is slightly buckled. This is a generally lustrous straw-gold half eagle with a precise strike and only a hint of friction, limited to the forehead and cloud centers. Despite the recent publication of the well made Bass-Dannreuther reference, collecting early half eagles by die pairing has yet to catch on. Nonetheless, varieties of the greatest rarity have enormous market potential, and the present piece should be the subject of enthusiastic bidding.(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25NX, PCGS# 8083, GSID# 8872)
