Description

Sharp 1802/1 'Centered Overdate'
Five Dollar, BD-2, AU58

1802/1 $5 AU58 NGC. Breen-6440, BD-2, High R.4. The 2 in the date is away from the bust, and the ribbon in the eagle's mouth is incomplete. No 1801-dated half eagles are known. Although two obverse dies were made, they both remained unused until 1802, when both were overdated with the 2 over 1 and pressed into service. Those two obverse dies are known as the Centered Overdate and High Overdate in Bass-Dannreuther. The obverses were combined, respectively, with five and three different reverse dies--with only the BD-6 Reverse E paired with both--for a total of eight different matings in all. This piece is sharply struck throughout, including the central hair strands and the eagle's breast feathers atop the shield. There are minimal handling marks, with those few present requiring a magnifier to see. The surfaces are predominantly yellow-gold, complementing rich reddish patina around the device peripheries. A marvelous coin to represent the type.
