Description

1802/1 Early Half, BD-1, MS61
Historical Overdate

1802/1 $5 BD-1, High R.4, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. The 1802/1 five represents a fascinating juncture in the half eagle's history in which the U.S. would forgo an 1801 issue despite preparing the necessary obverse dies needed. In 1802, they would then redate the unused dies for that year's mintage. The alteration of the unused dies left a blatant overdate that can be differentiated between the two prepped obverse dies. BD-1 is scarce, but remains one of the two more collectible Centered Overdate varieties, with John Dannreuther estimating a survivorship of only 75 to 100 pieces.

This well struck example displays remarkably reflective fields with topaz-gold luster. The surfaces exhibit a plethora of light abrasions in the fields, which do not detract from the coin's eye appeal and largely blend in with the die cracks that identify its late die state. The coin, while common in this grade, represents a historically significant design variety for type collectors.
