Description

1802/1 BD-2 Half Eagle, AU55
Early Die State

1802/1 $5 BD-2, High R.4, AU55 NGC. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. Eight die varieties of 1802/1 half eagles were coined from two overdated obverse dies. This obverse is the first used and shows the 1 centered beneath the 2, and that complex well below the drapery. The other obverse has the 1 left of center and the top of the 2 touching the drapery. The overdate feature of all varieties adds to the popularity of these half eagles. This example is housed in a generation 13 NGC holder that was employed from November 2004 through September 2008. While slight weakness is noted at the eagle's claw to the lower left and at the junction of the shield and wings, this example has lovely straw-gold surfaces with slightly reflective fields and no mentionable marks.
