Rare BD-7 Die Pair, AU58

1802/1 $5 BD-7, R.5, AU58 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b-c/a-b, intriguingly with both obverse and reverse in transition. The obverse has the crack from star 5 to the rim but not the one at star 3; similarly, the reverse shows a faint crack through the last three letters of UNITED but not the one from the arrows through the shield. Luminous yellow-gold surfaces contain lighter hues in the protected areas, as well as red-gold highlights throughout. Design details are mostly complete, and the eye appeal of this near-Mint State coin is exquisite. The BD-7 die marriage is of medium rarity, with an estimated 50 to 65 coins known according to Bass-Dannreuther, beating out the BD-1, 2, and 8, which are in the R.4 range, but is still significantly behind the R.7 ratings of BD-3 through BD-6. Die State b/b contains the light crack through TED, but does not exhibit any further deterioration. This coin is an excellent example of the date, and would find itself at home in a date or Guide Book collection.
