Description

1802/1 Half Eagle, MS61
BD-8, Sharp Strike

1802/1 $5 BD-8, R.4, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c. This interesting die state shows an emerging die cud over the T in UNITED; however, we see no evidence of die clashing on the obverse, indicating it may have been lapped in this final state. According to The Harry W. Bass, Jr. Museum Sylloge, eight die varieties are known for 1802 half eagles, all of which have the final 2 in the date punched over a 1. The issue was struck with two obverse dies, which are distinguished by different centering of the underdigit 1. This high-grade example displays a needle-sharp strike and moderately prooflike fields with no individually mentionable abrasions.
