    Description

    1802/1 BD-8 Five Dollar, MS62
The Final Emission Sequence of the Variety

1802/1 $5 BD-8, R.4, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. Two obverse and seven reverse dies were used for the 1802-dated half eagle coinage. Both obverses were overdated 1802/1. BD-8 is from Obverse 2 and is most easily differentiated by the 1 underdigit located left and high in relation to the center of the 2, whereas it is centered on Obverse 1. This obverse is seen here in the last of its three marriages. BD-8 is the only variety that employs this reverse die.

In Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties, John Dannreuther estimates that 150 to 200 BD-8 coins survive, making it the most plentiful 1802 half eagle variety overall. Nonetheless, Mint State examples are elusive. This piece displays a sharp, even strike with mostly complete border dentils and sharp interiors. Satiny yellow-gold surfaces have light grazes that limit the grade, but the eye appeal is nonetheless pleasing. Census (all varieties included): 26 in 62 (1 in 62+), 29 finer (3/18). (NGC ID# 25NX, Variety PCGS# 519889, Base PCGS# 8083)
