    Description

    1802/1 Half Eagle, XF Details
    Very Rare BD-4 Variety

1802/1 $5 --Mount Removed--NGC Details. XF. Breen-6440, BD-4, R.7. A substantial total of 53,176 Capped Bust Right half eagles was minted in 1802, all using overdated dies from 1801. Eight die varieties are known for the date, with the present coin representing the very rare BD-4 variety, with the 2 free of the bust and the arrows on the reverse extending only to the middle of N in UNITED. The BD-4 variety probably accounts for only 1,500-2,000 pieces of the original mintage, and John Dannreuther estimates no more than 10-12 examples survive today in all grades. The present coin shows rim damage consistent with the removal of a mount, but the pleasing greenish-gold surfaces are lightly worn and lightly abraded. Much original detail and mint luster has been retained on this very rare early half eagle.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25NX, PCGS# 8083)
