Description

Frosty 1802/1 BD-7 Five Dollar, MS63

1802/1 $5 MS63 PCGS. Breen-6440, BD-7, R.5. All 1802 half eagles show bold remnants of a 1 under the final 2 in the date; the result of two 1801 obverse dies being modified as such. The first five varieties for the year are mated with Bass Obverse 1, whereas the final three variants in the emission sequence were struck with Obverse 2. The current offering was produced with a marriage of Obverse 2 and Reverse F--the only die in which the reverse legend was prepared with a defective "T" punch.
Of the estimated 3,000 to 6,000 coins produced from the BD-5 die pairing, only 50 to 65 pieces are extant in all states of preservation, according to the Bass-Dannreuther reference on early gold coinage. The same source indicates that this variety appeared 37 times at auction between 1990 and 2005. Remarkably, we offer another example of this scarce die marriage in the current sale--that coin being an AU55 survivor.
Originality is the most memorable feature of this Mint State specimen, which also boasts frosty surfaces and boldly defined details. A superficial abrasion extending from star 3 to Liberty's hair is all that likely precludes an even finer designation. For future identification purposes, we note an area of darker toning that encompasses the field between the eagle's left wing and the ribbon on the reverse. Population: 29 in 63, 19 finer (11/08).
