Description

1803/2 BD-1 Half Eagle, MS63
Even Yellow-Gold Surfaces

1803/2 $5 BD-1, R.4, MS63 PCGS. Rich yellow-gold surfaces remain consistently colored throughout. Luster radiates across the surfaces, particularly on the reverse. Select obverse hair details are slightly indistinct, and weakness on the reverse is limited to an inconsequential area over the left talon. A small patch of abrasions in front of the mouth are all that warrant mention.

All 1803 half eagles are 1803/2 overdates, comprising two obverse dies and four die marriages. The present BD-1 combines Bass-Dannreuther Obverse 1, shared with BD-2 and BD-3, with Reverse 1802F, used on BD-7 of that year. It is rated R.4, in line with BD-3 and BD-4, but slightly more available than BD-2, an R.5.

Among all die marriages of 1803/2 half eagles, the present example is one of the finest known examples. Just 25 certification events in MS63 have occurred, with only 20 finer (1/26). Moreover, this likely includes significant resubmissions due to the combination of high overall value and high grade. Collectors should seize the opportunity to obtain this superb Mint State half eagle.
