Description
1803/2 BD-2 Half Eagle, AU55
Green Label PCGS Holder
1803/2 $5 BD-2, R.5, AU55 PCGS. HBJ-225. Minor
grade-consistent marks are evident on both sides with heavy
scratches through the Y in LIBERTY. Lustrous light yellow surfaces
host a small orange toning spot at the lower left-facing wing.
Housed in a PCGS generation 3.1 green-label holder.Variety Equivalents: Adams-1, Breen 1-B, Miller-55, Bass-3079.
Obverse Die: This is the first 1803/2 overdate die that was used for BD-1, BD-2, and BD-3.
Reverse Die: This is the only use of the reverse die.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/c: The obverse die crack from star 7 to the field over star 6 requires magnification to view. The reverse and a delicate bisecting die crack from the border through the E in STATES, angling down through various devices, reaching the top right serif of the U and the border.
PCGS Population Data (10/25): PCGS has certified 78 examples of this overdate in AU55 and 236 finer submissions.
Significant Examples: While the 1803/2 BD-2 half eagle is relatively plentiful, the Jacobson Collection sale presents the 11th finest that we have handled since the 1993 start of our Permanent Auction Archives.
Breen (1966): This variety is comparatively plentiful within the early half eagle series. Breen rated the variety R.5 and suggested that it might be R.6.
Bass-Dannreuther (2006): "While this issue has been considered the most available 1803, the next variety (BD-4 with the second obverse) for years was miscataloged as this variety. After surveying auctions from 1990 to 2005 and correctly noting the varieties, this combination is nearly the exact same rarity as BD-4 - at one time considered very rare! However, this variety is available and 125 to 175 coins are believed to exist."
Heritage Commentary: Attribution of this variety is straightforward. It is the only variety where the space between two clouds is below the upright of the E in STATES. The other three varieties from two obverse dies, have the cloud space right of the upright, nearing the center of that letter.
Doug Winter Commentary: A decent example of a very tough variety. And who doesn't love an early five in an OGH?
Provenance: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2015), lot 7024.
