Description

1803/2 BD-3 Half Eagle, AU55
Popular Early Overdate

1803/2 $5 BD-3, R.4, AU55 PCGS. The Draped Bust half eagles issued from 1795 to 1807 include 14 overdate varieties, such as the 1796/5 BD-1 and 1797/5 BD-7 varieties. All eight 1802 half eagle varieties are from two obverse dies, both overdated with the 2 over a 1. The two 1803 obverse dies are also overdated as 1803/2, and they were used to create four die marriages. A complete collection of the 14 varieties presents an extraordinary challenge, as several of those varieties rarely appear in the numismatic marketplace. The present lovely green-gold example shows light wear on the high points with scattered grade-consistent marks. The strike is nicely centered with excellent design definition.
